Filer sharers an IP not a person

A woman from South Carolina in the US is being sued by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for alleged file sharing. It is the legal language that is being used by the RIAA’s legal teams that is being put into question and is risking the whole legal case.

It seems that the RIAA issued almost 30,000 file sharing lawsuits last year, but not any specific person; they managed to obtain the IP address only and followed the trail from there leading them to the people charged.

However it is being argued that an IP address is not a person and therefore cannot be charged with anything at all. It’s going to be interesting how this pans out!
