New law on encryption technology

Many organisations these days use encryption technology, after all they are advised all of the time to be security conscious, but there is a slight problem around the corner. Since the beginning of the month there has been a change in the law which means refusal to reveal the decryption key could land that person in prison for up to five years.

This is part of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, which means if a person is served with a notice they have to hand over the key or make the data available, and don’t think that forgetting the key is going to get you off, they have that point covered too, five years in prison is a powerful motivator.
